How to Be a Soft Place to Land

Promise low stakes. Promise to eat the truth.
Open your throat into a canyon, bouncing

back echoes of the voice he accidentally
threw out with Thursday’s newspaper.

Teach him alpha. Teach him instincts.
Paint your body a landscape he needs to climb.

When his arms turn to ivy at night, become
desert. Slip through his curled fingers.
